10 Years of OBMICA in a Documentary

OBMICA has helped bring migration into our scientific discourse

In 2019, OBMICA celebrated 10 years of service to the community as an applied research center, or think tank, focused on the migrations that originate in, pass through, or are headed to the Dominican Republic. During this decade, the organization became a reference point for research on migration dynamics in the insular Caribbean and its diasporas.

We are honored to share an audiovisual journey through our institutional trajectory by filmmaker Mijail Peralta, who gathers first-hand testimony from OBMICA collaborators and colleagues, its academic antecedents, and the first steps toward a systematic and reflective practice on migration.

The documentary features sociologist Wilfredo Lozano, a founding member of OBMICA; our director Bridget Wooding; associated researchers Eddy Tejeda, program coordinator at FLACSO-RD; Marcos Morales, director of the Geographic Institute at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo; and anthropologist Adriana Salcedo. Journalist Amelia Dechamps also takes part, along with Ana Maria Rodriguez, coordinator of the Venezuelan Diaspora in the Dominican Republic, and Eulogia Familia, vice president of the National Confederation of Trade Union Unity (CNUS).

As part of its legacy, some 78 publications, studies, bulletins, dossiers, protocols, and manuals are available online for consultation and download at www.obmica.org. They address social issues linked to its lines of work, including trafficking in persons, the right to nationality, labor rights, the state of migration, gender, and the environment.
