Unprotected Motherhood

This book, Unprotected Motherhood: New Challenges for Migrant Women in the Provinces of Elias Pina and La Altagracia, authored by Bridget Wooding, is set against an analysis of the evolution of new Dominican public health policies since 2020 in the post-pandemic period, their implementation, and their effects on the sexual and reproductive health of affected migrant women and their families.

Within this context, the publication examines the state of access to health services for migrant women, with particular reference to the provinces of Elias Pina and La Altagracia. It explores trends affecting access to public health services and obstructing the effective enjoyment of the right to sexual and reproductive health for migrant women and their families. It characterizes the knowledge held by Haitian migrant women and Dominican women of Haitian origin regarding their right to public health in the Dominican Republic, both for themselves and their relatives, in the face of increasingly restrictive migration policies.

The study identifies barriers to accessing these services and places the testimonies of the women themselves in dialogue with the perspectives of health service providers in several locations. Its conclusions include recommendations for the relevant authorities and civil society organizations aimed at securing greater fulfillment of the rights of these women and their families.
