Gender and the Risk of Statelessness for People of Haitian Descent in the Bateyes of the Dominican Republic

In this book, based on historical and sociological research, we argue that important gender dimensions shape the risk of becoming stateless, or remaining in a state of legal limbo, for Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic. Broadly speaking, these dimensions relate to the risk of statelessness generated by the denial or deprivation of the right to nationality, the effects of remaining in that condition, and the strategies of resistance used by those affected.

Broadly speaking, the dimensions discussed relate to:
1) the risk of statelessness generated by the denial or deprivation of the right to nationality;
2) the outcomes and effects of remaining in that condition; and
3) the strategies of resistance used by the people affected.
We aim to contribute a timely analysis that can help identify solutions to the humanitarian crisis threatening to unfold in the Dominican Republic in the wake of the Constitutional Court ruling.
Applying a gender perspective to the documentation situation of Haitian women and Dominican women of Haitian descent, and of their families, reveals patterns and particularities that in turn allow human rights defenders to identify strategic points for strengthening the struggle against this grave and brazen violation of human rights.
