State of Migration Concerning the Dominican Republic 2020

OBMICA presents the 2020 edition of State of Migration Concerning the Dominican Republic, a year marked by new challenges for human mobility as the pandemic affected the world, including the insular Caribbean.

Since 2011, OBMICA staff and associated researchers have monitored migration dynamics in the insular Caribbean and at the binational level between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This effort resulted in the State of Migration Concerning the Dominican Republic (EDM), the annual statistics publication that best represents OBMICA's research-for-action model. OBMICA understands its work as a cycle in which research feeds back into the field to influence the development, implementation, and monitoring of public policies based on evidence.

The 2020 edition is organized into four chapters: migration trends in the insular Caribbean; Dominican emigration; immigration flows; and the human rights situation of migrants and their descendants. It features a reader-friendly design with icons and colors and welcomes a new author, sociologist Liliana Degiorgis, who wrote the first chapter.

Produced under the challenging conditions of the 2020 pandemic, the yearbook is intended as a resource for migration policymakers and for civil society organizations that monitor and advocate for the rights of migrants and their families.
