State of Migration Concerning the Dominican Republic 2019

As 2020 comes to a close, OBMICA shares the latest edition of its migration yearbook as an institutional gift after a year marked by major challenges for migrant populations. Since 2011, OBMICA staff and its team of associated researchers have monitored migration dynamics in the insular Caribbean and at the binational level between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This effort culminates each year in State of Migration Concerning the Dominican Republic, the publication that best embodies OBMICA's model of research for action.

OBMICA conceives its work as a cycle in which research returns to the field to influence and motivate key actors involved in the design, implementation, and monitoring of public policy. The 2019 yearbook offers an updated and realistic perspective on migration flows affecting the Dominican Republic, while also presenting a broader overview of migration in the Caribbean and beyond, including Caribbean emigrants in Europe and North America and Haitian migrants transiting through the Dominican Republic toward third countries such as Ecuador, Brazil, and Chile.

To facilitate reading, the publication uses colors and icons to distinguish its chapters. It is organized into five chapters: migration trends in the insular Caribbean; Dominican emigration; immigration flows; migration governance in the Dominican Republic; and the human rights situation of migrants and their descendants. OBMICA also makes the full volume and each chapter available online for consultation and download.
