Memory and Conflicts at the Border: Reflection on the Future Organized in Comendador
The Caribbean Migration and Social Development Observatory (OBMICA) is organizing a series of activities complementary to those held in Santo Domingo and at the Ouanaminthe-Dajabon border during the month of October to commemorate the events of 1937 at the border.
OBMICA wanted to focus its commemoration efforts on the Haitian-Dominican border line, in the town of Comendador, in Elias Pina, and thus contribute to debate and reflection on the sociopolitical events that occurred 80 years ago.
The cycle of activities, which takes place at the Juan Pablo Duarte Cultural Center in the province of Elias Pina, is entitled “Memories and Border Conflicts: Building the Future” and brings together photographic arts, conferences, meetings, and musical concerts in order to revive and express the spirit of coexistence that prevails in the region.
On Monday, October 23, a photo exhibition will be inaugurated with works by photographer Hillary Petrozziello, retracing the work of people who live and earn their livelihood around the binational markets, including that of Comendador, a key actor in the economy of this town and in the coexistence of the peoples of this island.
On Tuesday, October 24, a lecture entitled “The Haitian-Dominican Border: Past and Present” will be given by Maria Cristina Fumagalli and Bridget Wooding, director of OBMICA, two experts who have sustained a line of reflection on the border, harmony, and artistic creation. On that same day, the activities will close with rapper Ty Delmas and the group formed by the musicians of the Azuei Movement, bringing together Haitian and Dominican artists.
