Gatherings to Remember the Horrific Events of 1937
The Observatory for Caribbean Migrants and Social Development supports and takes part in the activities organized around the events of 1937, when the Trujillo regime attacked the Haitian community along the border. These activities have been organized by the Juan Bosch Foundation with the support of nearly a dozen civil society institutions.
More specifically, OBMICA's director Bridget Wooding and Natalia Riveros, head of Research and Programs, will take part in separate working tables whose main objective is “to create a community of inquiry that does not exist on this issue,” as the Foundation, the organizer of the event, has described it.
The agenda of encounters, which runs from Wednesday the 18th through Friday the 20th of October, also includes the presentation of the books “Juan Bosch para comprender Haiti” and “From the Massacre to Ruling 168-13: notes for a history of the segregation of Haitians and their descendants in the Dominican Republic,” by Ricardo Seitenfus, Amelia Hintzen, and Matias Bosch.
“We understand that this atrocious event in our history is a key point for expanding Dominican historiographical research in favor of historical memory, truth, justice, and ethical transformation. In this sense, our gathering can be regarded as a seminal project of research and action,” the organizers state.
