OBMICA at the Virtual Pro Bono Conference of Asia

OBMICA participated in a conversation on the legal status and legal rights of groups in situations of vulnerability in the Caribbean and in South and Southeast Asia. The aim was to inspire strategies to counter narratives that portray “threatening others.” The discussion focused on how to promote practical avenues for mobilizing interregional solidarity with a view to establishing more durable relations between the respective regions. Among other things, the following topics were addressed:

• How can we address anti-refugee sentiment, narratives, and dehumanizing language that use migrants and refugees as targets and political scapegoats, stigmatizing them and reinforcing stereotypes in social imaginaries?
• How can we effectively shed light on and challenge discriminatory xenophobic narratives found in some social practices, laws, and policies that disproportionately affect certain groups? What tools, avenues, and solutions can we find within the human rights and social movements framework? What role can interregional solidarity play?
• Within the framework of regional solidarity, how can we devise constructive exchanges when encountering common challenges and sharing transferable practices?
