CCE in Santo Domingo Debates Migration in Central America's Northern Triangle

August 30, 2017. The Spanish Cultural Center in Santo Domingo hosted, on August 29, a highly interesting day dedicated to migration and its particular impact in Central America and in the countries that make up Central America's Northern Triangle.

The center proposed the screening of a documentary that portrays the issue in the most open and forceful way: “Casa en tierra ajena,” a Costa Rican production, 80 minutes long, directed by Ivannia Villalobos, which was then analyzed by a group of experts the CCE brought together for this event.

Moderated by Eddy Tejada of FLACSO, the event featured Maria Paredes of IOM; Carlos Abaunza, associate researcher at OBMICA; and Natalia Riveros, Research and Programs Coordinator at the Observatory for Caribbean Migrants and Social Development (OBMICA).

Riveros, echoing what Villalobos's film presents, stated that the transit of migrants along this route toward the United States entails, in addition to the traditional dramas associated with migration, a series of sacrifices and dangerous situations to which travelers expose themselves, ranging from extortion to death, including kidnapping, rape, and trafficking in persons.
